Sankhya Karika I Sankhya Sutra
Ivan Antic
Here are two texts that belong to the most important works of classical Indian philosophy. The first is Sânkhya-karika, and the second is Sânkhya-pravacana-sutrani, but is more famous as Sânkhya-sutra. The first was created in the third, and the second in the fourteenth century and represents the peak of the development of a system called Sânkhya. He is included in one of the six orthodox school systems or Darshana. The rest are: nyaya, vaisheshika, yoga, purva-mimansa and vedanta. It is not too much to say that entire Indian philosophy is based on the concepts that are found in sânkhya, in other teachings, some of their aspects are emphasized. Sânkhya is at the heart of the entire (not only) Indian spirituality because it is based on the fundamental distinction between purusha and prakrti, consciousness and existence. These are two basic terms sânkhya. This distinction is the basis for an objective realization of existence as it is, and therefore for man's self-realization. The great significance of Sânkhye is that it identifies the spiritual essence of existence, purusha, as the essence of man, his soul.
