Symphony 9 in D Minor
Bruckner
"Symphony No. 9 in D minor" is the last symphony upon which Anton Bruckner worked, leaving the last movement incomplete at the time of his death in 1896. Van Beinum, the Dutch conductor, was a specialist in the music of Bruckner. One of the best recordings of the Bruckner 9th, some say that it is THEE best, was recorded in Amsterdam in September 1956 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. This is, by any standards, a great account of the 9th, one that is more dramatic than epic, a performance that anatomizes this great wounded giant of a symphony. Eduard van Beinum is responsible for the Concertgebouw Orchestra's Bruckner tradition. Eduard van Beinum was a great Brucknerian.
