Barely Autumn - 'Day Trip to the Petting Zoo'
A light-hearted tribute to meaninglessness
Barely Autumn, the band founded by Brussels based songwriter Nico Kennes, reinvent themselves on 'Day Trip to the Petting Zoo'.
Their second album sounds more edgy and on point than ever. It radicalizes the band's very nature: that is the creation of pure, straightforward songs about everyday life topics, while simultaneously transcending the ordinary.
'A Day Trip to the Petting Zoo' is a record about loneliness and frustration, without descending into mere melancholy. It's an unpretentious crusade by - and for - confused millennials, in search of their place in this world. It's a tongue-in-cheek tribute to meaninglessness.
Stylistically, Nico Kennes refrains from any kind of musical limitations, thus casting off the band's former 'acoustic indie rock' label. Bas synth-based pop noir, enticing art rock and plain mellotron melancholy: Barely Autumn effortlessly blend eclectic genres and truly come of age as a band on this album.
The lyrics - drenched in irony - display Barely Autumn's characteristic down-to-earthness. The music at times alludes to EELS and The National, at others to DJ Shadow or Sufjan Stevens, while sounding fresh and vigorous nonetheless.
'Day Trip to the Petting Zoo' will be released on January 24th 2020.
