Modern Man
Stanley Clarke
An opening statement of a drum roll and horn fanfare opens the album as Stanley declares his power as coming "from the pluck of a string". This goes into the smooth, almost soft rock styled "He Lives On (Story About The Last Journey Of A Warrior)." After this? Its back to a couple slices of serious funk "More Hot Fun". There is stadium rock power in "Opening (Statement)" and "Closing (Statement)," with a slice of "pure" jazz in "Interlude: A Relaxed Occasion." The title track and "Rock 'N' Roll Jelly" are the standouts, with the power trio of Beck, Clarke and Appice on the latter. A full orchestral sound is presented on "Got To Find My Own Place." A truly sublime work recorded in 1978 but no less relevant.
