1922 Suite for Piano / Three Piano Sonatas
Tim Frederiksen
In a powerful surge in creativity, Paul Hindemith wrote three piano sonatas in succession in 1936 - the year that was to end with a complete ban on performance by the Nazi regime. The premieres of the sonatas were canceled, but Hindemith nevertheless wrote music history with them. The sonatas differ as far as possible in terms of complexity and technical challenges, so the extremely demanding first is followed by a short, light-footed second one. Overall, they paint a differentiated picture of the composer, which Andreas Skouras ingeniously completes by starting with the Suite for Piano from 1922.
