Collection 1952-62

Goldie Hill, who was always dubbed on her record labels in her early years as "The Golden Hillbilly", was a pioneer in country music, in that she was one of the first female solo artists to rise to prominence in the USA, and was one of the first women to top the US Country charts when she went to No. 1 in 1953 with "I Let The Stars Get In My Eyes", and along with artists like Kitty Wells and Jean Shepard made a significant breakthrough for female country singers. Born Argolda Voncile Hill in Texas in 1933, she performed on the Louisiana Hayride, which got her a contract with Decca. This 56-track 2-CD set comprises a significant proportion of her A & B sides for Decca during this era, plus selected titles from the albums "Goldie Hill" and "According To My Heart", released during these years. It includes her landmark 1953 country No. 1 "I Let The Stars Get In My Eyes", along with her hits with Justin Tubb "Looking Back To See" and "Sure Fire Kisses" and her hits with Red Sovine "Are You Mine" and "Yankee Go Home". She was an archetypal country performer of this era, interpreting songs by some of the genre's finest writers, and this collection is an enjoyable introduction to her work
