Collection 1937-52

Martha Tilton was one of the coterie of big band vocalists who made their mark in the late 1930s and early 1940s with the big swing bands of the era, and then forged successful solo careers in the post-war years as austerity undermined the viability of the big bands. She performed and recorded with the Benny Goodman Orchestra from 1937 until 1939, racking up a string of over 20 hits with records on which she took the vocal honours, before signing to the newly-founded Capitol label in 1942 as a solo artist. Staying with Capitol for the rest of the 1940s she had eight hits and then joined Coral, registering one more hit during her time with the label. This great-value 50-track 2 CD collection comprises most of her hits with The Benny Goodman Orchestra, plus selected A & B sides from her solo singles on Capitol and Coral from this era, including duets with Hal Derwin, Harry Babbit and Curt Massey. Among those nineteen hits with Benny Goodman included here are the No. 1s "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" and "And the Angels Sing", and the collection includes all her solo hits, including the Top 10 entries "I'll Walk Alone", "Stranger In Town", "I Should Care", "How Are Things In Glocca Morra", "That's My Desire" and "I Wonder, I Wonder". It's a substantial and entertaining showcase for a versatile vocal stylist, and a performer who captured the essence of the music of her times.
