Friends Jay McShann and Al Casey were both steeped in blues and jazz, so it is no surprise that this fine JSP album is brimming with positive spirit and entertainment value. Piano-playing leader and vocalist Jay 'Hootle' McShann first made his mark in Kansas City in the 1930s before leading equally successful bands in New York and on the West Coast over the next couple of decades. He went on to become became a popular jazz attraction in Europe through the 1970s and '80s. Guitarist Al Casey was a key side musician, playing and recording most famously with Fats Waller and also with Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday, with James P. Johnson, Alberta Hunter and with saxman King Curtis amongst others. This collaboration was recorded by JSP circa 1980 in Essex Studios, London, directly to tape in a 'live in studio' situation, hence the good time feel of the session. Mention must also be made of the superlative support provided by the excellent rhythm section of Kenny Baldock (bass) and Robin Jones (drums).
