Deep Calls to Deep
Steve Bell
Inspired by Steve's 1989 trip to India with Father Bob MacDougall, this album fuses Steve's western-influenced writing style with new sounds from the far east. Steve's Story: I the fall of '89, I had the privilege of travelling to India with Father Bob MacDougal. We travelled to the District of Darjeeling (where the tea comes from), a little jut of land squeezed between the borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. We stayed several days with Father Van and the brothers at Mount Carmel Jesuit Novitiate. There in the midst of their life of devotion to God, surrounded by a beauty which never ceased in it's praises to our Maker, I experienced something of the meaning in a song they taught me: Deep calls to deep And my soul finds No resting place but Him He is my God The yearning of my soul His touch can still And each rare moment I've felt His presence I shall remember and forever cherish Many of the songs on this album are in one way or another a response to that experience. It is my wish to dedicate this album to Father Van and the brothers who were then living at Mount Carmel. Glory to God.
