John Coltrane
Unearthed 1961 Coltrane live recording from New York's Village Gate.
"Evenings at the Village Gate" features eighty minutes of never-before-heard music from the short-lived John Coltrane Quintet line-up of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner and Reggie Workman. The recordings were recently discovered at the New York Public Library. This 5-song, 1+ hour performance was recorded months prior to Coltrane's legendary Village Vanguard shows, and it features the Village Vanguard stables "Impressions" and "Greensleeves", signature takes on "My Favorite Things" and "When Lights Are Low" (last of which has a stunning feature of Dolphy's bass clarinet), as well as the only known live rendition of Coltrane's "Africa".
