When his six-year-old daughter is abducted at the Manhattan Port Authority, William Keane (Damian Lewis, BAND OF BROTHERS) is distraught. He spends his days patrolling the bus depot, compulsively going over the events of that fateful day, while his nights are a self-destructive miasma of alcohol and drugs. Before long, Keane starts showing signs of schizophrenia; he's nervous and paranoid, talks to himself, is prone to sudden outbursts, and appears to be losing his grip on reality. When he befriends a down-on-her-luck mother (Amy Ryan) and her daughter (Abigail Breslin) who are staying at the same motel, it's hard to know whether he is just being neighbourly or whether his emotional attachment to the young girl (who coincidentally is about the same age as his missing daughter) is more for his benefit than her own. Writer-director Lodge Kerrigan lets the story tell itself without passing judgement; there's no manipulative score tugging at the heartstrings, and he uses only natural sound and lighting. Some of the film was even written on location, adding to its stark realism. Lewis turns in a remarkable performance as the tormented lead character that's at once effortless and thoroughly unnerving. KEANE is a gritty, authentic, emotionally-charged film that will stay with viewers long after the credits roll.
