Suspect (1944)

In early 1900s London, tobacconist Philip Marshall (Charles Laughton) had the gratitude of a young steno (Ella Raines) he found work-and the contempt of a shrewish wife (Rosalind Ivan). Denying him a divorce, she soon dies after an "accidental" house fall... but a suspicious cop (Stanley Ridges) and a blackmail-minded neighbor (Henry Daniell) will make Philip's path forward anything but clear.
