Mashenka's mother has died. Some time ago the same thing had happened with her father, so that she has been left alone, in charge of Sonia - her younger sister - and barely guided by Katia, the governess. Mashenka is 17 years old and due to this sad situation, she is circumspect and without expectations. But lo and behold, on any given day, Serguei Mijailovic, an old friend of his father's, visits his house, at the time, in charge of some of the family's legal affairs. She remembers him fondly, although it has been more than six years since they last saw each other. It will be he, with his humor and intelligence, who brings the girl out of her withdrawal and urges her to continue with her life.
