Randolph Carter is not only the protagonist of the homonymous cycle, but he's also the alter ego of the author, his dreamlike counterpart. Lovecraft was not just a simple dreamer, but an "expert navigator" capable of making real "lucid dreams"; and it is from them that he drew much of the wonders and horrors that we can admire in his works.
