Caato admits she isn't much of a sheriff, not a proper detective. Verita confesses she isn't much of a documentary maker as she asks to shadow the sheriff to record her investigative processes. The two, along with Caato's sister, return to their village from a conference where they stumble onto a seemingly accidental fatality and then some unexplained deaths. The cadavers pile up all over the village, and something probably killed the victims at the same time. People all around the world begin to die off in large numbers. When the state and federal authorities swoop in, they push aside the women. Except Caato has a personal stake in the deaths, so she won't be deterred even as she and Verita learn those deaths may signal the end of all humanity.
