Dr. Masroor Hashmi, "Now that I have covered more than eighty years of my life, I am writing these pages to see how far do I remember the days gone by. It won't be fair to call it a biography, since, I have forgotten so many events altogether, and some of those written are also clouded in doubts. Then what is the motivation that has led me to write it at all? The first reason is that reading, and writing have become my sole occupation after retirement. Perhaps it would be difficult for me to pass time without reading or writing. Moreover, after translating several books the habit of reading and writing has strengthened, and I feel satisfied at engaging myself in such work. Furthermore, the main work in schools and colleges is also reading and writing, and my teaching experience covers almost half of my life making me addicted to reading and writing. There are two catastrophic events that persons of my age have suffered from. One is the second World War and the other Partition of India. I have tried to write as less as possible on them or else they would have led me into the dark alleys of fear and hatred, the major failings of human beings. After writing these rather apologetic words I will now narrate my past days, which, God knows, how much would be of interest to my readers. But, in any case, I will have the satisfaction of writing them."
