Japanese Fairy Tales
Yei Theodora Ozaki
Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora OzakiFirst published in 1908, this is a book of "beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan" that were collected, translated and retold by the author, Yei Theodora Ozaki, who states: "...in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West." In part, the project was the result of a suggestion made by her friend Andrew Lang, another collector of fairy stories, who printed his stories in the many Colored Fairy Books. Yei Theodora Ozaki was an early 20th century translator of Japanese short stories and fairy tales. Her translations were fairly liberal but have been popular, and were reprinted several times after her death. Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This book is a fabulous compilation of classical Japanese tales collected and narrated by Yei Theodora Ozaki, such as: My Lord Bag of RiceThe Tongue-Cut SparrowThe Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher LadThe Farmer and the BadgerThe "Shinansha" or the South Pointing CarriageThe Adventures of Kintaro, the Golden BoyThe Story of Princess HaseThe Story of the Man Who Did Not Wish to DieThe Bamboo-Cutter and the Moon-ChildThe Mirror of MatsuyamaThe Goblin of AdachigaharaThe Sagacious Monkey and the BoarThe Happy Hunter and the Skillful FisherThe Story of the Old Man Who Made Withered Trees to FlowerThe Jelly Fish and the MonkeyThe Quarrel of the Monkey and the CrabThe White Hare and the CrocodilesThe Story of Prince Yamato TakeMomotaro, or the Story of the Son of a PeachThe Ogre of RashomonHow an Old Man Lost His WenThe Stones of Five Colors and the Empress Jokwa"Japanese Fairy Tales" may involve and entertain either adults or teenagers.
