Joseph Jacobs (August 29, 1854 - January 30, 1916) was an Australian folklorist, literary critic, historian, and writer of English literature who became a notable collector and publisher of English folklore. His work went on to popularize some of the world's best-known versions of tales in English such as Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Jack the Killer and Tom Thumb. He published his collections of English tales: English Fairy Tales in 1890 and More English Tales in 1894, but he was also inspired after and in between the two books to publish tales collected from continental Europe, as well as fairy tales, which made him in one of the most popular writers of Jewish, Celtic and Indian tales for the English language. Jacobs was also an editor of magazines and books on the subject of folklore which included the edition of Bidpai's Fables and Aesop's Fables, as well as articles on the migration of Jewish folklore. He also edited editions of The Thousand and One Nights. He then went on to join the Folklore Society in England and became an editor for FolkloreSociety magazine. Joseph Jacobs also contributed to the Jewish Encyclopedia.
