On my Way
Martin Knapp
The author was born in Oxford in 1952. He completed a degree in History at Peterhouse (Cambridge University) in 1973. After several years driving trucks and buses he fell more or less by accident into working as a developer in the nascent IT industry. In 1978 he moved to France, where he still lives, to get married and so acquired French citizenship. He retired in 2017 after 40 years in IT, since when he has not touched a computer except to write. In 2016, a year before retirement, the author set out on the 1800km walk from Vézelay in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, along St James' Way (sometimes better known as the Camino de Santiago). Somewhere between travel writing and an intimate reflection on life, the author recounts his experience of walking the Way. It's a story of countries walked through, of mental and physical challenges, of history, of walking meditation, and of unforgettable encounters. Perhaps reading it will inspire you too, to set off on the Way. If you have already walked it, this may bring back memories and allow you to see your own experience through other eyes.
