Set in the early twentieth century, in the fictional city of Saint Anthony (Minneapolis, Minnesota), follow the adventures of the unlikely hero, Johnny Holiday. Left on the steps of an orphanage and forced to find his own way in the world, Johnny came of age during the Great Depression, worked his way up through the newspaper businesses: from paperboy, to the presses, to journalist. The novel begins when Johnny is commissioned by a wealthy man to write a biographical essay on his missing son-in-law and investigate his disappearance. Soon he finds himself caught up in a world of gamblers and gangsters, witchcraft and alchemy, police corruption and murder.
