Bedouins made history founding small states in the midst of cultural areasthese peculiar incidents of the 10th century, unique to the Islamic Middle Age, have prompted the assumption that the Fertile Crescent was bedouinized. Kurt Franz presents a critical overview of the shifts of power between the nomadic and sedentary peoples of that period. He approaches the Bedouin point of view and shows how territorial-institutional and mobile-predatory strategies of expansion were juxta-posed. He argues that protection by Bedouin emirs constituted a new model of indigenous government, which could have served as a regional alternative to the rule of military slaves.
