During the final phase of the CAK-Research-Project (Cultural Area Karakorum), an examination of the stock of Indian provincial archives was begun, giving special attention to the Persian sources from the nineteenth century. The most important finding was that the archive of Jammu stores substantial parts of the administrative documents of the Dogras as well as the correspondence with the surrounding principalities. Jammu is the former capital of the Dogra dynasty of Jammu and Kashmir (184692). On the basis of an edited, annotated and translated selection of the Persian documents, the spread and the importance of the Persian language has become more evident, as well as details about the administration of the Dogras in Kashmir and Gilgit, the manner and intensity of the written communication, and manifold political and historical circumstances.
