Robinson Cytologic Grading of Invasive Ductal Breast Carcinoma: and Correlation with Histopathologic Grading and Lymph Node Metastasis Status

Breast carcinoma is a leading cause of death in India. Incidence of breast carcinoma is a decade earlier in our study than in western population. Robinson?s cytologic grading system correlated well with Elston and Ellis? modified Scarff Bloom Richardson system of histologic grading of breast carcinoma by Pearson correlation, with an overall accuracy of 90.90% in our study. We applied objective criteria for evaluation of cell dissociation and nucleoli, which was found useful practically and showed statistically significant correlation with cytologic grade (Uni-variate analysis) as well as histologic grade (multiple regression analysis). We thus conclude that Robinson?s cytologic grade correlates well with the Elston and Ellis? modified Scarff Bloom Richardson system of histologic grading, with good overall accuracy, and thus can help clinicians in deciding plans for neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We also recommend use of our proposed objective criteria for better assessment of cytologic grading.
