For Krista Schneider and her sister, Mila, growing up in the village of Bleichenbach in central Germany was a happy and joyful existence. But that happiness ends abruptly when the harsh realities of life under the Nazi regime is visited upon them.
Her family has been hiding a critical secret from Krista, that when exposed, sets off a chain reaction of events that leads to families being detained, separated, and some murdered.
Krista believes her entire family has been killed when she's taken to live with a woman who works for the Gestapo. It's when she finds out that her father is alive and has been exiled to an army installation in the north, that she makes it her life's mission to find him. Krista escapes and tries to take refuge by heading deep into the ominous Bavarian Forest to avoid detection while looking for him.
Unbeknownst to Krista, the forest isn't safe either, as its sinister darkness plays host to tortured and terrifying spirits who bear the scars of war.
