Raised on the family ranch just south of Raton, New Mexico, seventeen-year-old Coy Danewood is an excellent roper. Billy Jones, Coy's dad's best friend, helps Coy enter local rodeos to win money. When Coy's parents are killed in a horrific accident, without Billy's guidance he would have never gotten the settlement that, in the next couple of years, saves the family ranch.
Judith Kilpatrick and her three-year-old son Gunner are abandoned by her ex-boyfriend who is Gunner''s biological father. When Coy Danewood offers her a place to stay she reluctantly accepts. However, she is suspicious of his intentions and is adamant about not sleeping with him. She soon finds herself attracted to him, but Gunner is the one who melts Coy's heart.
Judith gets jealous of a woman named Darlene McDaniels, especially after she finds out the Darlene and Coy dated in high school. Darlene is mean mouthed and that fuels Judith's dislike, but when Coy asks Judith to marry him she knows he loves her and her son only.
Coy becomes the perfect husband, and father to Gunner. Judith turns out to be the best ranch wife a man could ask for, but will Darlene come between them in the long run?
