Miss Jessica Lovelia DeGresse moved to her lonely cabin on the edge of Nahollo Swamp in east Alabama seeking refuge from a restless, indifferent world. In tending her younger brother, a war vet, she began to experience unnatural and unearthly seductions: strangeness and ghostly companions, including the Mystic Beast.

She struggled to maintain sanity against looming threats hideous and unknowable, primitive in secret ways.
