My father was a remarkable man: physician, war hero, devoted husband, father, and friend. Two of his greatest attributes were complete honesty and an extraordinary ability to think deeply. All his life he was a voracious reader and a prolific writer.

Shortly before he died in 2007, he asked me to compile and publish selections from his writings. This book captures his unique spirit. Anyone who reads his book will be contributed to, just as everyone who knew him in life.
