The Yellow Caravan

Honor Elwes' ballad of The Yellow Caravan, together with her diary, is a hilarious account of three young ladies touring Norfolk in a horse-drawn caravan 100 years ago. Juliet Webster re-traces the original journey of the Yellow Caravan from Castle Rising in the west, through the undulating scenery of the Norfolk Heights, along the north Norfolk coast of sand dunes, mud flats, salt marshes and shingle ridges to Cromer and Overstrand cliffs; then down through the reed beds and peat marshes of Broadland, thence through the secret stunning scenery of south Norfolk before heading home across the Brecks to West Norfolk's heathlands. Juliet makes jottings of old and new to interest the reader along the way. These range from explaining the landscape the Ice Age left behind, cooking Norfolk Dumplings, the story of Black Shuck, and the history of both the Norfolk Police and the Norfolk Yeomanry. She comments on the churches, country houses (some of which have since disappeared) and people encountered by Honor and her friends on their two-week tour. The information will urge readers to drive, ride or walk following the route round some of Norfolk's most scenic places. Or, just sit back and laugh at the verse whilst enjoying the many photographs of the trip taken by three enterprising young ladies with their Box Brownie cameras.
