Gordon has had himself committed to the psychiatric ward of a state hospital and Thanielle has run away from a stultifying home life. When there is an unprecedented quake on the moon the effects on both their lives is immediate and startling. Both of these damaged individuals meet an older man named Jacob. Jacob is homeless by choice and seeking only to be of help to his fellow man. Jacob brings Gordon and Thanielle together, first as friends, then, when he has gone off in search of his next person to help, as lovers. Once set loose from Jacob's benevolent care Gordon and Thanielle travel through a forested land where they find refuge in a derelict restaurant, a motel where its inhabitants wait for the world to end and are forced to pay off a meal tab by washing dishes under the tutelage of a philosophically astute mentor. Part fantasy, part romance, part fable, Lunar Effects carries the reader along on a quest for the life that fits the characters of Gordon and Thanny while showing us how there is a little bit of both of these young people in all of us.
