The story begins in New Orleans late one night when Irma, a frightened itinerant singer and threatened witness to a murder, knocks on a stranger's door looking for help. Fred, retired and twice divorced, lets Irma into his house and life. He wants more from his life of perceived mediocrity and is a dreamer. Irma is a survivor who approaches life stoically with pragmatism and is a doer. Fred and Irma bond. Together they feel empowered to be bold and look for more from life. They agree to expand their horizons by moving to a new home where there are friendly people, an interesting history and cuisine, and a touch of exoticism. They act on their idea. This fulfills a dream for Fred he was never able to accomplish by himself. They embrace life together in an exciting new city, to the consternation and concern of their respective children. They encounter a variety of characters who engage them in various adventures.
