The Letters of Henry Elijah Parker Book I
Lawrence A Brown
The Letters and documents of Henry E. Parker: 19th century scholar, pastor and gentleman. This first volume includes all of the pre-Civil War letters. Here we learn about the relationship of the Parker family with two Cherokee girls from Alabama who came to live with the Parkers in New Hampshire during the period of the forced removal of native Americans from their lands in the Southeastern United States to the Oklahoma territory. We also gain insight into the relationship of Henry Parker to Franklin Pierce, a member of Parker's congregation in Concord, N. H. who became the 14th President. Another focus of many of these letters is Parker's courtship and marriage to Marry Elizabeth Huntley, a widow with two young children. These letters document the early life of a scholar, a pastor and a gentleman.
