Synopsis: Daufuskie Scooter Browne had returned from Vietnam. The Battle of Hue' had left its mark. It was a mark less delible on his soul than the Marine tattoo inked inside his right forearm. One horror filled day in Vietnam now drove him for justice. Four desperate faces tormented his sleep, their spectral images relentless as the swarms of no-see-ums on the Savannah River of his youth. In 1978 Scooter buries a box on a desolate South Carolina island. The next morning he drops an envelope in a mailbox. Within three months Scooter is dead, a seemingly innocent victim of a senseless robbery. Years later Jackson Day is spending his summer polishing up his newly renovated lakeside home in Austin, Texas.
