Introduction

A direct and principal aim of the present volume has been to endeavour to make the history of Illawarra, its pioneers, and their dairy cattle a more interesting as well as a more useful study, by attempting to trace a well defined plan of events for the mind of youthful settlers on the broad acres of Australian soil, in place of presenting a mere mass of unconnected facts to the memory.

It would be a cause of joy, however, if as far as its scope may permit, this volume were able to lay claim to a second aim. The Abbot, Gregor Mendel has sounded a note which should vibrate through the minds of young stock breeders. He has discovered the secret of forming new breeds, and better types of animals and plants. It would then be good for the country if Mendelism was more closely studied with a view of still improving on the wonderful results achieved by the pioneer dairymen of Illawarra and their sons.

"Men," said Bacon, "have entered into a desire of learning and knowledge, sometimes upon a natural curiosity and inquisitive appetite; sometimes to entertain their minds with variety and delight; sometimes for ornament and reputation, and sometimes to enable them to obtain the victory of wit and contradiction, and sometimes for lucre and possession; but seldom sincerely to give a true account of their gift of reason for the benefit and use of man, as if there were sought in knowledge a couch whereupon to rest a searching and restless spirit, or a track for a wandering and variable mind, to walk up and down with a fair prospect, or a tower of state for a proud mind to raise itself upon, or a fort on commanding ground for strife or contention, or a shop for profit or sale, and not a rich storehouse for the glory of the Creator, and the relief of Man's estate." I hope then that my readers will benefit from my humble effort, as it is as the old aboriginal expressed it ? "Coompartoo."

Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices.

This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making.

We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.
