Private investigator R. A. Huber stumbles upon a murder at Talblick by chance while touring Europe. She is invited to stay at her childhood friend Erika Graff's residence in a village near the resort town of Davos, Switzerland. Erika's father, eighty-four-year-old Otto Sonderegger, summons his sons to the Talblick estate because he has an announcement to make. The old autocrat causes venom within the family when he makes his proclamation, which leads to murder. Huber is struggling to solve the homicide when the killer strikes down a second victim. She finally connects the dots, but barely escapes with her own life when the murderer turns on her.
