Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë was initially considered to be wildly controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was unusually stark as it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day regarding religious hypocrisy, social classes, gender inequality and morality. It is a story about revenge. It follows the life of Heathcliff who was adopted. Within his adopted family he is reduced to the status of a servant. Later in life the woman he loves decides to marry someone else, heartbroken, Heathcliff runs away. He later returns rich and educated seeking revenge on all who opposed him.
