The Thirty Nine Steps

When Richard Hannay lets his neighbour stay at his flat, he does not expect to become the target of an assassination attempt. In fear of his life Scudder pleas with Hannay to give him refuge and tells Hannay of a plot to start a war between England and Germany. When Hannay returns home one day to find Scudder with a knife in his heart he must flea from both the police, who suspect him of murder, and the group who know that he knows too much.
