Elizabeth Bacon Custer
This is the story of life with General George Armstrong Custer as told by his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842-1933). She was a housewife on the plains, nurse to frostbitten soldiers, and any-hour-of-the-day hostess to the regiment. She was also the garrison's favorite confidante, and would-be Indian fighter whenever the women of the regiment had to be left alone. Elizabeth rode with Custer on all of his major expeditions except his summer Indian campaigns. Boots and Saddles offers a gentle, loving portrait of Custer by the person who knew him best. Elizabeth' devotion to him is reinforced throughout the book, which ends the only way it could: by Custer's disaster at Little Big Horn. Included in this Illustrated Edition of the 1913 version of "Boots and Saddles are the two original illustrations, rejuvenated.
