Dr. Dimyati Nangju's story is one of determination, dedication, and the refusal to accept anything less than personal excellence. It's the story of a young, underprivileged boy born in the small town of Pagar Alam in South Sumatra, Indonesia.
Sickly, and the youngest member of a large family, Nangju's chances of achieving a university education were impossible. He did it anyway, proving himself an excellent student time and again until he'd studied in three countries, ultimately earning a PhD in agronomy.
Determined to make a difference in the world, Nangju applied his hard-won education to agricultural development, working first for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria, and then for the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines.
One of the University of Hawaii's most influential alumni, Nangju has improved the lives of farmers across Africa and Asia through his work. After retirement, he continued to offer his services as an international consultant, helping communities across the globe develop their agricultural and rural resources.
Nangju's story is an inspiration and guide to all students and young professionals who desire excellence and international recognition for their work. You can learn from Dr. Dimyati Nangju, and he has much to teach.
