The Upper South Colony that was also known as the Chesapeake Region Colony. It consisted of New England, Maryland and Virginia. The Anglicans were very numerous in this region because of the immigration here was mainly from England and Scotland. There were wealthy tobacco growing business men in this region. The second oldest college in America, College of William and Mary (1693) was built during this time and in this region in Virginia. Virginia's royal governor 1768-1770 of Lord Baron de Botetourte (born Norborne Berkeley in London 1717-1770) was a financial contributor to Princeton University after John Witherspoon became president in 1768. Queens College (1766) was also built in honor of Queen Anne. It is now Rutgers in New England. King George II also chartered The King's College to be built in New York in 1754 and it is now known to be Columbia University. The British Empire is truly the beginning of the North American Colonies. The great men of God and Enlightened thinkers are sown into the fabric of our government going back to as early as 1620 when The Great Awakening began. What the British North American Colonies were experiencing as it related to The Great Awakening it was also happening back in the mother-land of Britain.
