La storia è ambientata a Torino nel 1892 e narra dei tormenti del giovane Simone, perdutamente innamorato della maestra di ginnastica Maria Pedani. Lui è piccolo, timido, ex seminarista e tutt'altro che sportivo. Lei, al contrario, è forte, bella, moderna e, per i tempi, spregiudicatamente femminista.
