Handbook of Alternative Fuel Technologies - Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering 2nd edition

Brief Description: "This book focuses on the different intermediates and raw material options that can generate energy output and products equivalent to conventional petroleum sources. It presents short-term options for clean alternative energy sources that complement the development of long-term sustainable energy infrastructures. Detailing the chemical processes for each technology, the text also assesses the environmental impact, benefits, and performance of the various processes and fuel products. It also summarizes processing and transportation issues, safety concerns, regulations, and other practical considerations associated with alternative fuels"--Biographical Note: Dr. Sunggyu Lee is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His specialty areas include alternative fuels and renewable energy, advanced and functional materials, as well as chemical reaction and process engineering. Dr. Lee has 34 U. S. patents and over 180 international patents in addition to more than 500 archival publications. He is the editor of the "Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing" published by Taylor & Francis. He earned his PhD from Case Western Reserve University and his BS and MS from Seoul National University. Dr. James G. Speight, C CChem, FRSC, FCIC, FACS, earned his BSc and PhD from the University of Manchester, England. He also holds a DSc in the geological sciences (VINIGRI, St. Petersburg, Russia) and a PhD in petroleum engineering (Dubna International University, Moscow, Russia). Dr. Speight is the author of more than 50 books and Editor-in-Chief for a number of journals in the energy and environmental fields He was elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1996 and awarded the Gold Medal of Honor that same year. He has also received the Scientists without Borders Medal of Honor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2001, the academy also awarded Dr. Speight the Einstein Medal. Sudarshan Loyalka was educated in Pilani, India (BE 1964) and Stanford University (MS 1965, PhD 1967). He is currently a Curators Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Nuclear Science and Engineering Institute at the University of Missouri in Columbia. His educational and research interests are in transport theory, aerosol mechanics, the kinetic theory of gases, and neutron reactor physics and safety. A registered professional nuclear engineer in Missouri, he is a coauthor/coeditor of five books, and is a member of the editorial advisory boards of both Progress in Nuclear Energy and the Annals of Nuclear Energy."Review Quotes:"The main strength of the material is the comprehensive coverage of all potentially viable sources of alternative fuels and the assessment of the current state of the process technology for transforming these sources into viable alternative fuels. In my opinion this book is a must for any serious researcher in the field of ethanol production and/or any educator who teaches a course on alternative fuels and ethanol production." David G. Retzloff, University of Missouri"Marc Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.; This book focuses on the different intermediates and raw material options that can generate energy output and products equivalent to conventional petroleum sources. It presents short-term options for clean alternative energy sources that complement the development of long-term sustainable energy infrastructures. Detailing the chemical processes for each technology, the text also assesses the environmental impact, benefits, and performance of the various processes and fuel products. It also summarizes processing and transportation issues, safety concerns, regulations, and other practical considerations associated with alternative fuels--; Provided by publisher.; Energy has always been the foremost important resource upon which humans have relied for survival and productive activities. Industrialization and technological advancement of modern society have also been possible through the effective use of energy. There is a strong correlation between the index for quality of life and energy consumption. Heightened economic strength of a country, technological prosperity of a society, higher production output of an industry, improved finances of a household, and increased activities of an individual are also realized by effective utilization of energy--; Provided by publisher. Publisher Marketing: While strides are being made in the research and development of environmentally acceptable and more sustainable alternative fuels - including efforts to reduce emissions of air pollutants associated with combustion processes from electric power generation and vehicular transportation - fossil fuel resources are limited and may soon be on the verge of depletion in the near future. Measuring the correlation between quality of life, energy consumption, and the efficient utilization of energy, this handbook thoroughly examines the science and technology of alternative fuels and their processing technologies. It focuses specifically on environmental, technoeconomic, and socioeconomic issues associated with the use of alternative energy sources, such as sustainability, applicable technologies, modes of utilization, and impacts on society.
