This early work set in nineteenth century Uruguay is a fascinating novel of the period and still an interesting read today. The novel charts the life of an Englishman who, upon marrying a teenage Argentine without her father?s permission is forced to flee with her to Montevideo. The reader follows Richard Lamb?s adventures with gauchos and women as he gets involved with rebel guerrilla fighters.
