The Saint's Tragedy

Charles Kingsley was a 19th century British novelist. Kingsley became a minister before becoming a Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge. Kingsley often used his writing to champion social issues. Elizabeth was the daughter of the king of Hungary and a saint. She was born in the year 1207 and was betrothed at age four. Elisabeth was married at the age of fourteen, widowed at twenty, relinquished her wealth to the poor, built hospitals, and became a symbol of Christian charity in Germany and elsewhere after her death at the age of twenty-four.
