Stanley John Weyman (1855 -1928) was an English novelist sometimes referred to as the "Prince of Romance". Most of his works were historical romances set amidst the turmoil of 16th and 17th century France. Under the Red Robe is set in the time of Louis XIII. A dashing but cowardly gentleman is condemned to death for killing a man in a duel. Cardinal Richelieu offers M. de Berautt a reprieve if he carries out a dangerous mission to arrest a religious rebel hiding in southern France.
