Washington Irving (1783 - 1859) was an American author best known for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Irving was also an essayist, historian and biographer. Irving was the first American writer to gain fame in Europe. Captain Bonneville was a French-born officer in the United States Army, fur trapper, and explorer in the American West. He is noted for his expeditions to the Oregon Country and the Great Basin, and in particular for blazing portions of the Oregon Trail. This is the story of his expeditions and adventures.
