Not illustrated. 1865 Excerpt: ...in pounds per square inch. It is the remainder of the quantity on line 15 after subtracting the quantity on line 12. Line 2 contains the number of double strokes made per minute by the engine piston. These quantities are obtained as follows; namely:--A careful comparison having shown that the number of double strokes made in equal times by the engine piston was in the direct ratio of the net indicated pressure upon it, (line 14 table No. 2,) the mean of the number of double strokes of piston made per minute during all the experiments detailed in table No. 1, (line 6 of that table) and the mean of the net indicated pressures on the piston (line 36 same table) were obtained, and then, by simple proportion, there was ascertained the number of double strokes of piston due to the net pressure on line 14 of table No. 2, and it was placed on line 2 of the same table. Lines 18, 19, and 20, contain respectively the net, the total, and the gross-effective horses powers developed by the engine. They are calculated for the speed of piston on line 2, and for the pressures respectively on lines 14, 15, and 17. Line 22 contains the number of pounds of feed-water, or of steam, consumed per hour per total indicated horse power. It is obtained from line 41 of table No. 1, and is, for the same point of cutting off the steam, the mean of the experiments detailed in that table. With saturated steam cut off at 0-24 of the stroke of the piston from the commencement, table No. 2, the quantity on line 22 is the same as that on line 41, column A, table No. 1. With saturated steam cut off at 0-32 of the stroke of the piston from the commencement, table No. 2, the quantity on line 22 is the same as that on line 41, column B, table No. 1. With saturated steam cut off at 0-50 of the str...
