The Stone Wall is a story concerning a young girl growing up in Raven's Call, an intentional heathen religious community in the northern Maine of the 1990s. Astrid, the story's heroine, is responsible, loyal to her family and community, and devoted to the elder traditions of her ancestors. When an ancient enemy from the utangards threatens Raven's Call, Astrid is called upon for assistance by no less a figure than Freya, the northern goddess of magic, love, and women in labor. Combining the little-known moral authority of northern Europe's pre-Christian period with a suspense-filled plot, The Stone Wall is a useful aid in teaching children ages 10 and up about the history, ethics, and native spirituality of the pre-Christian northern tribes.
