A Litany of Angels: the Memoirs of Leodegrance De Marciville As Told to Bernadette, the Maiden

With his victory at Agincourt, Henry V, the famous Prince Hal of Shakespearean lore, assumes that his victory over France is complete. However, within forty years, the French, led by their enigmatic heroin Joan of Arc, vanquish the English forever from the continent. A Litany of Angels tells the story of France's epic fight for its freedom in the words of one Leodegrance de Marciville, an ancient warrior, who dictates his tale to a young maiden, Bernadette. While Leodegrance survived his severe wounding at Agincourt and continued fighting until the English were defeated, he never considered the victories more important than the saints of his life. The first of those saints is his wife, Ann-Elise, a peasant girl who nurses him back to life after Agincourt. The second, Joan herself earns his respect and honor even though he speaks with her only once at any great length. The last is Bernadette, his brother's stepdaughter, who gives him back the ability to love. In the end, Leodegrance comes to an understanding of God's will, which he is finally able to accept. A Litany of Angles is a rich saga of heroism and pageantry that presents saints in the guise of warriors and angels in the guise of peasants #ndash; all seeking to understand and yield to the merciless will of God.
