In New York City, a girl named Willow looks out her window to see that a strange trickster she read about in one of her mother's books of folklore, really exists - and has appeared outside her room needing help. In the course of her adventures with this Pukwudgie named Walter, Willow learns that humans had taken Pukwudgie land to build their city, which drove the forest-dwelling Walter to seek revenge. Unsure of what to do, and a little bit scared, Willow befriends Walters' mysterious benevolent sidekick Dreadful, and journeys to the land of the Pukwudgie, and with the assistance of her wise and magical mother, Willow eventually helps them rebuild some of what they've lost.
