Publisher Marketing: Excerpt from The Odysseys of Homer, Vol. 1: Translated According to the Greek by George Chapman, With Introd, and Notes by Richard Hooper The former impression of these volumes, consisting of a thousand copies, has long been numbered amongst scarce books; and there has been a constant demand for their republication. It is gratifying to think that there is existing among us such a taste for sterling poetry. In acceding to my excellent publisher's request to superintend a new edition, I have carefully revised the text, and believe it to be as accurate as possible. Since the former publication there have been many translations of the Odyssey, but one of which only appears to be worthy of notice, namely that in the Spenserian stanza, by the late lamented Mr. Philip Stanhope Worsely. The illustrious statesman to whom this new edition is dedicated must be held responsible for this sudden outburst of zeal for Homeric translation, as his admirable "Studies on Homer" turned the public attention to the old bard. I have no doubt, however, that he has been sufficiently punished by innumerable presentation copies. I could have wished to have added a few more notes illustrative of Chapman's language, but I trust, on the republication (if called for) of the fifth volume of the Translations, to give a Glossarial Index to the whole. Contributor Bio:  Chapman, George Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was an English dramatist and poet, whose reputation amongst playwrights of the period is only second only to Shakespeare's. Although Jonson found little success as an actor, his reputation as a dramatist was firmly established in 1598 with "Every Man in his Humour". This sucess was followed by "Every Man out of his Humour" and the classically influenced satire "Cynthia's Revels." Jonson wrote all of the major comedies upon which his reputation is now based during the period 1605 to 1614.
